At Portalupi Orthodontics, we believe every child deserves a smile they love to show off. From those very first gums to the full set of permanent teeth, caring for your child’s oral health can feel like a big job — but it doesn’t have to be confusing! Dr. Richard Portalupi and our friendly team are here to guide you through each stage of your child’s dental journey with clear, simple tips tailored to their age.
The Early Days: Caring for Baby Gums (Birth to 6 Months)
Did you know dental care starts before teeth even appear? After every feeding, gently clean your baby’s gums with a soft, damp cloth or infant gum brush. This helps remove leftover milk and bacteria, creating a fresh environment for incoming teeth. Plus, it gets your little one used to having their mouth gently cleaned — a great habit to build early!
First Tooth, First Visit (6 to 12 Months)
That first tiny tooth is a milestone worth celebrating! It’s also the perfect time to schedule your child’s first dental checkup. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends seeing a dentist by the first birthday or within six months after the first tooth comes in. At Portalupi Orthodontics, your child’s initial exam is a gentle introduction designed to make their visit fun and stress-free. Dr. Portalupi will check those new teeth and gums, discuss cavity prevention, and share tips for home care. Start brushing your child’s teeth as soon as the first tooth appears, using a soft baby toothbrush and a tiny smear of fluoride toothpaste (about the size of a grain of rice). Fluoride strengthens enamel and helps prevent cavities — essential for those developing pearly whites!
Toddler Time: Building Healthy Habits (Ages 1–3)
Toddlers are full of energy, and this is a key stage to establish solid brushing and flossing routines. Continue brushing twice a day, and once two teeth touch (usually around age two or three), introduce flossing. Since toddlers can’t brush or floss effectively on their own, parents should continue doing it for them. Watch what your toddler drinks, too! Avoid putting them to bed with bottles of milk, formula, or juice, which can cause decay overnight. Water is the best choice between meals, and keeping juice to no more than 4 ounces daily helps protect those tiny teeth.
Preschool and Early School Years: Encouraging Independence (Ages 3–6)
As your child grows, encourage them to take part in brushing, but keep supervising to ensure it’s done right. At this stage, a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste is perfect. Make brushing fun! Try playing a favorite two-minute song or using a colorful timer to keep them engaged. If your child’s first permanent molars start to appear around age five or six, ask us about dental sealants. Sealants act like a protective shield over chewing surfaces, helping prevent cavities in these important teeth.
School Age: Protecting Permanent Teeth (Ages 6–12)
Between ages six and twelve, your child’s smile goes through major changes as baby teeth fall out and permanent teeth come in. Keep up twice-daily brushing, daily flossing, and regular dental visits every six months. These appointments help us monitor tooth eruption, catch cavities early, and apply sealants to new molars.
If your child plays sports or active games, consider a custom mouthguard from Portalupi Orthodontics. A fitted mouthguard offers superior protection against dental injuries compared to generic store-bought options.
